Hidden away in the heart of Murray Bridge is a café that's doing far more than serving great coffee and delicious lunches - it's creating opportunities, building confidence, and bringing our community together.
Last week we visited Ability Café, proudly operated by Genuine Support Services Australia (GSSA) at 4/5 Seventh Street, Murray Bridge, and it's safe to say we left impressed.
From the moment we walked through the door, we were warmly welcomed by Carly, the café manager, whose enthusiasm is simply contagious. We also had the pleasure of meeting Gabby, the founder of GSSA, whose vision has created something truly special for our community.
One thing became obvious immediately - we certainly weren't the only ones who had discovered this hidden gem!
When we arrived, the café was absolutely buzzing with activity. Every table was occupied with a wonderful mix of people from all walks of life. We saw people enjoying lunch with their support workers, young parents catching up over coffee while their children enjoyed the atmosphere, local business staff grabbing takeaway lunches, and regular customers who were clearly on a first-name basis with the team.

For anyone who may have been hesitant about visiting because they weren't sure what to expect, let us reassure you - it feels exactly like walking into any fantastic local café, just with an extra dose of warmth and community spirit.
The café is spacious, with wide walkways that make moving around easy for everyone, and it includes a fully accessible bathroom. Every part of the venue has clearly been designed with inclusion in mind, ensuring everyone feels comfortable and welcome.
One of our favourite features was the large shared community tables. Rather than separating people, they naturally encourage conversation, connection, and a welcoming atmosphere where everyone belongs. It's amazing how something as simple as a shared table can make strangers feel like neighbours.
Another standout feature is the open kitchen. Guests can see the team working together, preparing meals, chatting, learning new skills, and genuinely enjoying themselves. It adds so much life to the café and allows visitors to appreciate the effort that goes into every meal.
The café is staffed by volunteers who are participants with GSSA, working alongside their support workers. Watching the team interact was genuinely uplifting. There were smiles everywhere, plenty of laughter, and a real sense that everyone was proud to be contributing. The environment wasn't just supportive—it was empowering.
During our visit, we were served by Zoe, who seemed a little unsure at first. However, as the day went on, it was wonderful to see her confidence grow. By the end of our visit, she was engaging with customers, smiling, and handling her role with ease. Zoe was absolutely amazing, and it was a great example of the supportive environment that Ability Café provides.
Perhaps the biggest contributor to the café's incredible atmosphere is Carly herself.
It's immediately obvious how much she loves what she does, and that passion spreads throughout the entire café.
One comment she shared with us perfectly summed up what Ability Café means to her:
"I have never been so excited to go to work. I actually want to get out of bed every Friday!"
You simply can't fake that level of passion, and it shows in every interaction with customers and staff alike.
Another thing we noticed was how well the team knew their regular customers. Conversations weren't limited to taking orders - they asked about people's families, remembered previous chats, and genuinely cared about how everyone was doing. That sense of belonging is something many businesses strive for, but Ability Café has mastered it naturally.
Next door to the café is a dedicated activity room featuring a large communal table. While it wasn't in use during our visit, we learned the space regularly hosts cooking classes, social clubs, workshops, and other community activities, extending GSSA's mission well beyond the café itself.
If you're short on time, don't let the busy atmosphere discourage you. Simply walk in and order takeaway. The service was impressively fast, with the kitchen working efficiently despite the lunchtime rush.
One thing to keep in mind is that the menu changes every week, giving visitors something new to look forward to. The new menu is announced every Tuesday on the Ability Café Facebook page, making it easy to see what's on offer before Friday arrives.
The café is open Fridays from 11:30 am until 2:00 pm, making it the perfect end-of-week lunch destination.
Ability Café isn't just serving meals - it's serving inclusion, confidence, opportunity, and community.
It's a place where everyone is welcome, everyone belongs, and everyone leaves feeling just a little happier than when they arrived.
It's easy to see why it has become such a popular Friday destination, and after experiencing it for ourselves, we can confidently say this won't be our last visit.
