THEATRE IMPROVISATION

Suitable for beginners and intermediate explorers of theatrical expression, and those who just want to have a laugh and gently push some boundaries when it comes to personal expression. Games are taken from many different sources, including Theatresports, Psychodrama, NLP and Contact Improvisation.

We provide a safe, relaxed, supportive and co-operative space for anyone who likes the idea of mucking about with self-expression and small group work. No memory for lines required, no possibility of 'getting it right or wrong'. The facilitator is not an 'expert', but an enthusiast with experience in holding space for these activities.

It's not about performance, there is no audience except the others in the class. And it's not about impressing anyone, except perhaps yourself. Improvisation Games are basic small group and partner activities that let you tap into your expressive self in simple creative ways. Our Number One priority for the class is that you enjoy yourself; nothing is compulsory and nobody will be scoring you. Definitely suitable for nervous newcomers who don't yet have a facility for vocal expression, as much of the class is based in movement.

Facilitated by: Ian Thomson

Ian has a long involvement in ecstatic dance, has dabbled deeply with theatrical improvisation games, and has sampled various personal development modalities that encourage people out of their shells. In 2007 he is undertaking a Graduate Certificate in Experiential and Creative Arts Therapy. Last year he began running classes in Improvisation Games in Brunswick and is delighted to extend and expand these at the PlaySpace.

THE TALENT SHOW

Anybody who has anything to say to sing, perform, read, yell or express in any way is welcome to perform at the talent show. The less experienced, the better. Actually, it is the very fact that most participants have no experience performing for a live audience that makes the talent show often so chillingly real and heartfelt. It also serves as a tool for some people to overcome (or admit) stage fright in front of an accepting audience and to go through a process of being extremely vulnerable and then to get to a place of power and self-expression.

Highly recommended.
